What Should You Do To Stop Snoring?

So you know you snore.  Maybe you sleep right through it, but your spouse tells you all about it.  Maybe they even sleep in a different bedroom.  You want to stop snoring.  You have heard about oral appliances but don’t know much about them.  What should you do?

The first question is whether you have simple snoring or do you have sleep apnea?  Sleep apnea kills, so it would be a good thing to know.  Are you tired during the day?  Do you wake up during the night with your heart racing or with a start? Do you occasionally get drowsy when you drive?  Do you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes?  A sleep study is the only way to know for sure if you have sleep apnea.  If you don’t get tired and you have no issues in your medical history, you may not need a sleep study. Since often snoring is the most obvious sign of sleep apnea, you should talk to your physician.  They can arrange a sleep study it they think you need it.

If you have simple snoring we can easily make an oral appliance for you that will likely eliminate the snoring.  A custom oral appliance will fit better, be more comfortable, will be better adjusted,  and last longer than over the counter appliances.   If you have mild to moderate sleep apnea an oral appliance is a great option as opposed to CPAP therapy.  If you have severe sleep apnea, you should try a CPAP first.  If you can’t or don’t want to use CPAP then an oral appliance is still an option.

Don’t let snoring disrupt you life or let sleep apnea shorten your life.  Snoring should not be ignored.  You may have been ignoring it or procrastinating, but now is the time to act!
